students participating in Olympics

Special Olympics

By: Gracie Hammonds

Area 30 Special Olympics for Roane County hosts three Special Olympics events in a year: one in late February/early March, which involves a bowling event; the second in mid March; and a final swimming event in the summer.

Oliver Springs Academy students recently competed in the second event of the year a few weeks ago. These students were: Zack Philips, Eric Philips, and Samantha Hammonds. They traveled to Midway Middle School to participate in the Special Olympics. There are many different competitions that these students could have participated in, such as standing long jump, softball throw, and several different length runs. Each student that participates in the Special Olympics can only do two competitions.

All three of our students that went all came back with medals for the competitions they took part in. Zack received a first place medal in the 50 meter run and the third place medal in the softball throw. Eric received the second place medal in the 50 meter run and the second place medal in the 100 meter run. Samantha received the first place medal in the 50 meter run and the third place medal in the softball throw.

Their teachers who accompanied them were Mrs. Giles, Mrs. Tarver, and Mr. Webster. They were also accompanied by two students: Senior Jana Banks and Junior Ava Brown. Football players Jaxon Jett and Liam Boeke also made the trip to help cheer on these students and help them in events. We are so proud of Zack, Eric, and Samantha!
