It's been 6 weeks since school let out for the summer and we have 5 weeks remaining until the start of the 2023-2024 school year so let's take a look back at some exciting events that occurred at OSHS at the end of the year.

Random Acts of Flowers: Class of 2023 Service Learning Class

As reported on earlier in the spring, the senior Service Learning class collected vase donations and money for Random Acts of Flowers (RAF). It was a competition between PBL groups. Over 300 vases/monetary donations were collected with Coach Rather's PBL winning and Mrs. Channell's class coming in a close second place. The Service Learning class then took the donations and worked a day at RAF. More information can be found here about the program: https://rafknoxville.org/

Mrs. Webber's Junior English Class Mock Trial

Each semester, the Junior Class plans, prepares, and completes a Mock Trial. They  try to recreate the justice system within their classroom. Students write a mock trial script using the "Classroom Law Project" website as a guide; they also complete Mock Trial Exercises for a couple of weeks. Eventually, they had two criminal jury trials this year with two different outcomes: one defendant was found guilty, while the other was found not guilty. If you happened to enter the classroom during the trial, you would have seen a defendant, judge, jury, attorneys, witnesses, clerks ,reporters, and a gallery (just like a real courtroom). This year, Judge Van Hook, an OS alum, was a visiting speaker. Next year, they  hope to work with Judge Van Hook to create a more authentic mock trial

Mrs. Kitts Media Arts Class Movie Premiere Party

Every semester the Media Arts class divides up into groups and writes, produces, and edits their own 10 minute film as a culmination to the entire class. They use skills learned throughout the course to put together their movie, promotional posters, and then plan a party.

Mrs. Webber's Sophomore English Class To Kill a Mockingbird "Missionary Tea Party"

The "Missionary Tea Party" is to wrap-up and celebrate the end of the To Kill a Mockingbird Unit. Students were ask to dress and act like a character in the novel to understand character relationships and to review for the unit test.

Scout and Miss Caroline have a love/hate relationship (students acting-out character relationships).

All the characters are eating together.
